File photo of a pharmaceutical drug File photo of a pharmaceutical drug The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched a project aimed at ensuring the safe disposal of expired and unused medications by members of the public. The “Take Back Unwanted Medicines” (TBUM) programme will provide outlets where unwanted medicines can be safely disposed of. The FDA is hopeful the project will (help) to save the public from consuming expired and unused medicines. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Delese Mimi Darko, told the media during a launch event in Accra that people usually dispose their medicines by flushing them down the toilet, emptying them in the sink or simply throwing them in the bin because there is no publicly known and easily accessible means of disposing medicines. She said those methods of disposal pose a challenge to the environment as the unwanted medicines may leach into water bodies and end up in the community water supply system. She emphasised the need for proper disposal of drugs to significantly reduce its toxic effects on the environment and also prevented them from getting into the hands of people who did not need them. Mrs Darko further indicated that the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) had specific provisions in its Section 132, clauses (2) (3) (4), that mandated the FDA to ensure safe disposal of medicines. She said the FDA, in that direction, will be running the TBUM programme on a pilot basis in the Greater Accra Region with 50 Community Practice Pharmacists before scaling it up to other parts of the country. “These community pharmacists have been provided with safely located containers/bins where the public can drop their unused or expired medicines for safe disposal,” she said. Mrs. Darko further noted that the next phase of the programme will be to include pharmacists and over- the-counter medicine shops in others regions.Send your news stories to and features to . Augustine Oppong was shot during a scuffle with the police after a football match Augustine Oppong was shot during a scuffle with the police after a football match Augustine Oppong, an Asante Kotoko supporter who lost his eye during a shooting incident at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Ghana Premier League is calling on the public to come to his aid. Augustine was shot by a Police Officer in a Ghana Premier League game after Asante Kotoko lost to Berekum Chelsea at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, in January 2020. In an interview with Kumasi-based Hello FM, the man who is currently visually impaired partially due to the incident admits that life has become difficult for both himself and his family. According to him, he’s had to sell his cocoa farm land to cater for his family and to make up for his inability to work despite being the breadwinner of the family. “In fact, things are difficult for me now. People helped me initially but I had to struggle to feed the family from February. We suffered a lot throughout the lockdown. I even gave my Cocoa Farm out for money. Things are really difficult for me,” Augustine Oppong said. Despite receiving some form of help from benevolent supporters of Asante Kotoko, Augustine Oppong maintains that he would be grateful if the masses can reach out to him. Augustine who was formerly a taxi cab driver explained that he couldn’t afford to risk the life of people and himself by going back to work again as a driver hence his reason to rely on people for help. He said, “The supporters have done their best and I’m very grateful. Don’t know how to thank them. They’ve been very supportive. Truth is after all that Christopher has done for me, I cannot rely on him to feed me and my family. That’ll be unfair and unnecessary pressure on him.” “So, I’m begging everyone to come to my aid. Things are really difficult for me. I need help to cater for my children and wife – who is jobless. I don’t want to drive again looking at the state of my sight in order not to get involved in an accident,” Augustine Oppong added.Send your news stories to and features to . Martin Amidu, Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, Special ProsecutorLegal luminary and public intellectual Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare (Kwaku Azar) has opined that Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s letter lambasting and shaming Mr Tettey Tetteh of STRANEK for petitioning his office to investigate the Agyapa deal is astonishing, and has the effect of discouraging others from petitioning his office.Mr Amidu chastised Mr Tetteh heavily for petitioning his office to do something that is already being done. He accused him of opportunism, populism and an appetite for underserved credit.But Prof Azar has argued that public offices such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) must be receptive of such petitions even if they are already working on the subjects of the petitions.“A good prosecutor should always welcome leads, information or complaints from the public, even if it turns out that they are not helpful, useful or redundant. This is because a prosecutor cannot or does not expect the public to know what information he has or does not have on crimes that have been or about to be committed.Further, a prosecutor should not reveal its sources to the public. Nor should a prosecutor publicly slam an informant for providing information that turns out to be unhelpful. Doing so only freezes others who may have relevant information. This is why I find the Special Prosecutor’s latest epistle lambasting and shaming Mr Tetteh of Stranek for allegedly petitioning his office to investigate the Agyapa deal to be astonishing,” he reacted on social media.Prof Azar disagreed with accusations of opportunism and populism on the part of Mr Tetteh, the petitioner, maintaining that that the attempt to shame him is untenable since such petitions could be important leads.“In the said epistle, the SP accuses the petitioner of being opportunistic and populist. I demur. Rather, I think the SP’s actions, obviously calculated to shame the petitioner, will have the negative effect of stopping others from filing such petitions or providing leads to the SP that may turn out to be very relevant,” he asserted.Prof Azar then urged Mr Amidu to concentrate more on his prosecution and limit his scripting and release of epistles and be accommodating and accepting of even redundant petitions.“There is corruption everywhere. The SP must welcome petitions, even if they turn out to be redundant, do more prosecutions and write fewer epistles,” he concluded.Several notable commentators have agreed with Prof Azar on the inappropriateness of the public ridiculing of the petitioner.Send your news stories to and features to . File photo File photo The National Labour Commission (NLC) has indicated that the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) will be withdrawing from its one day strike to resume work today. According to the NLC, regardless of the GRNMA dodging their ‘Personal Service’, they (NLC) have been able to get the go-ahead from the courts to ‘Substitute Service’. Speaking in an interview with Sefa Kwadwo Danquah, who sat in for Afrifa-Mensah on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show, Ofosu Asamoah, Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission said, “The GRNMA has been dodging us for a while now. We have been to their offices on over six (6) occasions but to no avail. We then went back to the courts to get a Substitute Service which we are circulating now. We have served the security officer at their premises and have pasted this notice on their walls.” The Executive Secretary of the NLC believes with this action taken, the GRNMA will be present for the sit down between both parties tomorrow at 10 am and reach a consensus. He reiterated that the nurses and other health personnel involved in the strike action will return to work tomorrow after their issues have been resolved and noted that the government has already agreed to six (6) out of the eight (8) demands of the GRNMA. Explaining why the NLC obtained an interlocutory injunction against the GRNMA, restraining it from embarking on their proposed strike, yesterday, Ofosu Asamoah indicated that the association did not follow the right process. “We just heard they were going on strike when they had not even sat down with us and that is why we placed an injunction on them. The NLC last Friday obtained an interlocutory injunction against the GRNMA, restraining it from embarking on the proposed strike, which began yesterday. “It said the injunction against the strike was for 10 days, and upon its expiration, the applicants are to come back to court on notice,” the statement issued in Accra added. The GRNMA last Thursday announced its decision to withdraw its services, effective today, to press home its demand for improved conditions of service. In a statement, the association alleged that the government’s stance during negotiations fell foul of Act 651 of the Labour Law, which deals with issues of good faith and which the association appears to also have an issue with. The announcement, which was signed by the presidents of the GRNMA, the Ghana Physician Assistants Association and the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists, directed the public to seek medical attention from other health facilities.Send your news stories to and features to . File photo of Okada riders File photo of Okada ridersThe Okada Riders Association says the manifesto of the opposition National Democratic Congress gives them hope.According to the organisation, while the NDC is welcoming of their means of survival, the governing New Patriotic Party is flip-flopping with their stance on their operations.It comes on the back of the declaration by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that the NPP government will not legalize Okada operations in Ghana.Addressing a news conference in Koforidua in the Eastern region, the Riders said the NPP has disappointed them.“Ladies and gentlemen, we want to make a bold and emphatic declaration after consulting our members across the country. At this juncture, we want to make it clear that commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators find hope in NDC’s People’s Manifesto. It addresses issues relating to our plight and we will do everything legally possible to ensure that the bearer of the idea, John Mahama wins the December 7 election. We call on all our customers, i.e. lawyers, teachers, bankers, soldiers, police officers, politicians, kayeyei, lecturers, engineers, seamstress, tailors, hairdressers, nurses, civil servants, assembly men, journalists, real estate agents, artisans and everybody who has patronized Okada due to the ease associated with its operations to join us campaign and vote for John Mahama and the Parliamentary candidates of the NDC. We can only be in business when John Mahama wins and majority of NDC Parliamentary aspirants win in the December elections. We also call on our family members, friends and dependants to join us secure our jobs on December 7. Securing our job is the only way we can continue to put food on the table and meet other needs,” the group said.They added: “We want to assure Mr Mahama that, not only have we resolved to vote for him in this elections, but we have also taken it upon ourselves to embark on a nationwide drive termed ‘Get Okada Votes’ (GOV) to ensure that all our members across the country speak through the ballot for legalization and regulation of our activities.“Aside this, we want to tell Mr Mahama and the NDC that our members will be busy on election day. As part of our support, we will transport voters ‘to and fro’ their voting centres without charging a fee. There are other initiatives we will embark on in the coming days. For the sake of emphasis, commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders have endorsed John Mahama and his People’s Manifesto.Send your news stories to and via WhatsApp on +233 55 2699 625.form#revue-form div{float:left}form#revue-form{width:600px;margin:auto}.revue-form-group{margin:10px 10px 10px 0}.revue-form-actions{width:298px;margin:10px 0}div#revue-embed{width:715px;display:inline-block;text-align:center;background-color:#e1e1e1;margin-top:10px}form#revue-form h3.title{text-align:center;padding-top:5px; width: auto;position: relative;bottom: auto;}input{border:solid 1px #d2d2d2;border-radius:3px;padding:10px}input#member_email{width:270px}input#member_first_name{width:191px}input#member_last_name{width:193px}input#member_submit{width:300px;padding:10px;background:#99b53a;cursor:pointer;color:#fff}input#member_submit:hover{padding:10px;background:#8db115;cursor:pointer;color:#fff}@media screen and (max-width:768px){div#revue-embed{width:100%;display:inline-block;margin:0 0 10px}form#revue-form{width:100%;margin:auto}.revue-form-group{width:95%}label{margin:0 0 5px 0;display:block}input#member_email{width:93%}form#revue-form div{margin:0 10px 10px;width:95%}input#member_submit,input#member_submit:hover{width:99%}}

GFA Club Licensing Manager, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh GFA Club Licensing Manager, Dr Kwame Baah-NuakohClick to read all about coronavirus →Chairman of the Club Licensing Board Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh has hinted that the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has instructed them not to give clearance to any club with outstanding bonuses or payments to be made to players and its technical team.Clubs in the sub-region are known to be highly indebted to their players and technical team which have always been denied by the officials, and thus leaving the main actors (players) to go hungry for months over unpaid fees and salaries.Speaking to Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy FM’s Happy Sports, he gave a hint on the instructions given the club licensing board and the Ghana Football Association ahead of the upcoming CAF champion’s league and Confederations cup respectively.“Let me give you a hint. The current Ghanaian Clubs that are going to compete in Africa, Asante Kotoko and Ashgold, CAF has reminded the club licensing board and the FA that, one of the key tenets of club licensing they will implement this year is that a club cannot have an overdue debt to any player or any of its staff”“Let me explain; if a club has an active promise to pay a player signing on fee which was due as at 31st December 2019 but has defaulted in paying such debt, the club licensing board should not give that club clearance to play in Africa. It does not necessarily mean the club should not owe but the said debt should not be overdue. Even our own statutes say so but then how many of our clubs can meet this?” He added.
